Twenty years later, and now an elder in his 70s, Al Gore is still giving Climate Reality presentations.
After more than a decade of delivering powerful presentations, Al Gore’s passion has grown into an annual global training movement. Climate Reality Training offers the opportunity to learn more about the climate crisis and empowers individuals to become climate education leaders within their regions.
Suzuki Elders, Dan Kingsbury and Bob Petrusa have recently completed a course in this training, and joined the ranks of 42,000 climate leaders worldwide, bringing Canada’s total leader count to 3,002. If you are a Suzuki Elder who is interested in mentoring young climate leaders – this pathway is for you!
Dan says, “This is the most Elder empowered environment with regional break-out zoom sessions having a 50/50 mix of elders and young caring individuals, many already engaged in the environmental movement and many just coming into the conversation.”
“The online training involved two weeks and about 16 hours of zoom streaming, coffee chats and regional meet-ups. It was excellent, it is ongoing and the training serves as a launch point for small and bold actions. Embedded within the training are Climate Reality mentors to support us trainees, and to inspire us all.”
Dan recommends it to all Suzuki Elders as a great intergenerational experience from which “to mentor, listen, and serve.”
Bob says, acknowledging he is writing from the land the unceded territory of the Qayqayt First Nations, that it was an eye-opening experience to be in the presence of so many passionate, dedicated and welcoming environmentalists. “I don’t recall having my green batteries recharged so quickly and positively in many a year.”

I came to new self-realizations about myself, but more importantly, I saw my role as a ‘knower of the truth’ as a duty which is challenging, demanding and ‘yes’ inconvenient. Seeing beyond my small needs is what makes Elders so necessary in our present-day circumstances.”
